  • Product Review: Cthulhu Pendant by Gudbrand Jewelry

Posted on Mai 5, 2016 8:42 pm by GilmanGilman Comment

It has been more than 20 years now since I became a Cthulhu devotee, well, a fan anyway, but there is something that has been missing from my possessions that a cultist should have: Dedicated Cthulhu Jewelry.

To rectify this abhorrent situation, I delved into the deepest, darkes, Nightgaunt- and Hunting Horror-haunted abysses of the Internet in search of something which would serve the purpose and please both me and the Great Old One Cthulhu.

What I found (via a simple Google image search) was the Gudbrand Jewelry shop on Etsy. One thing: Check it out, apart from the Cthulhu Amulet/Pendant I got, it also stocks some great Norse/Viking jewelry, other ethnic and just general jewelry. Really beautiful stuff!

But now for the Cthulhu amulet, this is what it looks like:

The one I got is made of brass, but there is also a sterling silver version available, and I am delighted. This pendant is worthy to be worn at any occasion. It is beautifully detailed, solid, heavy but not too heavy and the chain is slim but sturdy. When I say „heavy but not too heavy“ what I mean is: It has enough weight not to feel flimsy and cheap but is not so heavy as to feel uncomfortable around your neck.
Added bonus: Gudbrand is based in Estonia, so for European customers like me, there is little postage and the overall price tag is really low if you compare it to German, British or French prices. So: Money for value in this beautiful piece is excellent.

All in all, the Cthulhu pendant by Gudbrand gets 10 out of 10 carved idols!

  • Steampunk High Style – Jewelry

Posted on Oktober 28, 2014 10:58 pm by GilmanGilman 5 Comments

I think it has been years since I last posted something about jewelry, so I was pleasantly surprised to have my attention pointed to Charles Koll (www.charleskoll.com) who offers a range of custom high-end jewelry, some with a distinct Steampunk twist to it.

Two of his creations stand out, first, the Cipher:

    The Cipher:

The Cipher Iris an exploration of mechanisms that can tolerate the human hand.  Open up a mechanical watch and start playing with the guts and you’ll quickly see the inspiration —  This „Iris“ mechanism is a modified version of a classic Steampunk theme (clockwork) commissioned by a longtime Charles Koll client.  The Cipher combines a classic Iris design, with an internal rotary mechanism, rare earth magnets and a decoder ring.  While not a living creature, the little details are all steampunk.

And then, less Steampunk but with a cult factor of its own, there is the Hunterseeker (and if you wonder, what a hunterseeker, I googled that for you here).

    The Hunterseeker:

Inspired by Dune, the Hunterseeker mixes the descriptions of characters in the book with the style of the big-screen adaptation.  The ‚machine‘ is designed to look like it actually functions.  Inspiration came from a client who wanted a ‚jizai‘ (Japanese art form showing mechanical representations of living creatures) feel.

I am particularly fond of the hunterseeker and would love to tell you, what the piece costs, alas, it is not yet in the official range of the website, but I will keep you posted!

This time, I have to thank Andy, for pointing my inquisitive eye towards Kinekt Design:

This is such a nifty little ring… In a Steampunk setting it would probaly hold (or be) the key to an ancient tomb or the vault of a mad scientist or something…
In the real world, it is a nice piece of jewelry you can play with during boring meetings!

    Well,
Easter is comming up once more. This time it is overshadowed by a massive scandal within the Catholic Church regarding child abuse on a biblical scale…
Anyway… Nevertheless, I would like to get into the spirit of the season and share this nice piece of very fitting steampunk jewelry with you. It’s amazing what you can find on the ætherweb when you search for „Steampunk Easter“:

Another random webfind. It is amazing to see, how much overlap there is between the lovecraftian Mythos and Steampunk. Granted, the quest against Cthulhu and his (its?) minions is a worthy quest for a group of bold steampunk adventurers and scholars.

So here is this marvelous piece of jewelry, my sincere regards to the goldsmith who manufactured it. There’s a special place reserved for you in R’lyeh!
